Guild Wars 2 Review

Guild Wars 2

Well, it's finally official the MMO we all have been waiting for, the answer to all our problems, the WoW killer and the new MMO king ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2, has launched. However can this game really live up to everyone’s expectations?

Let me start off by saying the game is certainly good. However I am not sure if GW2 will be the WoW killer we have all been waiting for.

What I like!

GW2 has certainly innovated the MMO genre. Allot of the things that make you mad about leveling in other MMOs are fixed in GW2. To really understand this you really have to play Guild Wars 2 but here are some of my favorite improvements.

Automatic quests are one of my favorite things in GW2. You no longer have to clear spiders to get to a quest giver just to find out that he wants you to kill 10 spiders. It’s all automatic, say you walk up to a farm that is spider infested, your quest will automatically appear saying kill spiders, and disappear when you leave the area so your quest list is never cluttered. Also when you finish the quest you get your experience immediately and the reward is mailed to you. You can also check your mail anywhere :)

Dynamic events are also great. Once a while you will get a notice saying there is dynamic event happening. It’s just a quest that happens at random times that requires a large group of people to complete. However it is fun as many people in that area will run to complete the event. So you will find yourself in a group of 20 people fighting centaurs or protecting a caravan etc. It’s actually allot of fun

No need to party. You do not need to be in a party to play with other people. If you help someone down an enemy you both get the reward. You can’t steal other people’s kills. You simply just find a group of people that seem to be on your quest and help each other down enemies. This really promotes group play and makes it even more fun to play.

Automatic down leveling. This is also a great idea. I have friends that play GW2 but I may behind them in questing. No problem if they join me in a level 10 area they will automatically down level to 10 making the fights challenging. However they will still get rewards equal to their level. You can also party with people on different servers which is an amazing feature that I think is long overdue.

What is also good?

I want go into too much detail on these areas but the graphics & combat are very good. The combat feels very much action packed although it’s still hot bar based. Graphics are excellent both from a style perspective and visual appeal. Also your gear color can be changed anytime.

World vs. World vs. World

This is also a very unique and potentially fun part of GW2. Players from 3 servers fighting to capture keeps and supplies using siege engines in a persistent battleground (resets every few weeks). I was really looking forward to this and I have to say I am both pleased and annoyed. I am pleased because when you actually get into a large fight over a keep it could be allot of fun. However I am annoyed because when you die you have to teleport to the nearest waypoint. And it’s far. You have to walk and walk and walk back and if you get unlucky you can die in 1 minute of fighting and teleport back and walk and walk and walk again. Also my server sucks so we are really getting our buts kicked in WvWvW.

I will reserve my judgment over WvWvW because I think I am still too low level to really enjoy it. Also as I learn the map and how to fight better I think it will be allot more fun than it is.

World of Warcaft Killer?

There is still allot of content that I have not experienced in this game that will take some time to discover. Is this game a WoW killer for me? I do not think so. GW2 is different it lacks things like Raids, mount collecting, custom add-ons like the recount DPS meter, tank & healer roles (which many people like) & item level which are ever so present in WoW. I think WoW can (and will) adopt many of the innovations that GW2 has introduced and be just as successful as it is now. At the end of the day I think GW2 will hit other free to play titles the most. GW2 is probably the best free-to-play title available today. There are many WoW players that will switch but I am just not sure if GW2 will ever hit the 10 million player mark.

I do want to add that Blizzard certainly paid attention to GW2 releasing WoW’s patch 5.0.4 on the same day as the GW2 release. I am not sure how well that worked out though as during WoW’s server outage I was playing Guild Wars 2 :)

Future of MMO Servers

by aberent 11. May 2012 14:24

WoW Server List

Recent announcements from Blizzard and ArenaNet have me thinking about the future of separate servers in MMOs. This week we found out that Guild Wars 2 will support something called “guesting”. Friends on different servers will be able to becoming a temporary guest on their friend’s realm, allowing people on different servers to play together. We also know that GW2 will offer a single cross server auction house as well as cross server guilds.

Also this week we heard that World of Warcraft’s Mists of Pandaria expansion will feature cross-realm zones, allow players from different realms (servers) to quest together in lower level zones that are currently mostly empty. On top of this WoW already allows cross-server dungeons and raiding. S how long before the artificial server divide is a thing of the past, and we are all playing our favorite MMO in a same server? Now don’t get me wrong MMOs will probably always require multiple hardware servers. A single server is not powerful enough to host 10 million World of Warcraft players. However these servers do not have to represent a different world/realm in your MMO. Server load can be managed behind the scenes as you are entering a zone or instance. Technically speaking separate in-game servers/realms/shards do not need to exist.

Not everyone is happy about these changes, some players are adamant that separate servers create server communities. Many WoW players complain that the cross server Looking for Group (LFG) tool has ruined the game for them because there are no consequences to your actions when in a cross server group. I remember seeing the LFG tool discussion in SWTOR where the majority of posts spoke against a cross server LFG tool. It’s hard to tell if this is just a vocal minority.

I personally applaud and like the new server-less reality of MMO gaming. I want to play with my friends regardless of what server they are in and that creates community to me.

This Week in MMO Episode 94

by aberent 4. May 2012 08:49

GameBreaker.tv This Week In MMO discusses the Elder Scrolls MMO as well as TERA post release. We learn that that the new Elder Scrolls MMO, will occur 1000 years prior to Skyrim, it will have 3 factions fighting over control of the Empire, with PvP and questing dynamic events. There was also an open discussion about the combat style. At this point we are not sure if Elder Scrolls MMO will offer action style combat similar to Skyrim or if it will offer a traditional skill quick bar.

SWTOR Update 1.2 PvP Gear Changes

by aberent 9. April 2012 15:21

SWTOR PvP

Many SWTOR players have made a huge investment into their current PvP gear, just to find out that their gear sets will no longer going to be sold after Update 1.2. For players that have completed their full sets this may not be a huge deal. For other players that have their sets half done this patch may prove problematic. Today I want to summarize some of these changes and how they will affect you as a player.

First with Update 1.2 Centurion and Champion PvP gear will no longer be sold, however you will still be able to keep and equip the pieces you have already purchased. Battlemaster gear will still be available with modified stats (new purchases only). There will be also be 2 new PvP gear sets called Recruit and War Hero.

Set Name Expertise
Centurion 469
Champion 650
Recruit 896
Battlemaster 1164
War Hero 1291

Recruit

The Recruit PvP set is going to be purchasable with credits, and it will allow fresh level 50s to quickly get geared up and have an easier time competing with other level 50s. This is perhaps my favorite change to Update 1.2 as I had a real shock the first few PvP matches I played as a fresh level 50. A full set of Recruit PvP gear will cost 320,000 credits, with the main-hand piece being the most expensive at 38,600 credits. This new set will give you 896 Expertise in total, which will give you a better PvP bonus from the now defunct Tier 1 Centurion and even Tier 2 PvP Champion sets.

Now here is the bad part, currently Tier 2 PvP gear set made for fairly good PvE gear. Not as good as Tier 2 PvE gear, but certainly better than most Tier 1 PvE pieces. Champion PvP gear was also much easier to get, and many players elected to grind Champion gear as their first post 50 PvE/PvP gear. Recruit gear will only be a blue rating 128 gear (rather than Champion purple 136) so it will no longer be as good a choice for easy PvE gear for new level 50 players. On the other hand you will be able to buy it with credits so it may be ok for very fresh level 50s.

Because of its high expertise rating the Recruit set will be fairly good for PvP so I would suggest that players with Centurion PvP gear upgrade immediately. Champion gear will be a bit tougher to call. If you keep your Champion gear you will have less expertise but more stats in total. Recruit gear also lacks the set bonus found on Champion gear. My guess is I will keep my Champion gear and immediately start earning Battlemaster gear.

Battlemaster

Battlemaster gear is getting more expertise compared to the pre 1.2 versions. Some of the other stats are getting a buff, while some other ones are lowered. However the largest change is the fact that you no longer need to have rank 60 valor in order to purchase this gear and that you can purchase this gear directly with WarZone commendations. The total cost of a full Battlemaster set is 12,475 commendations with the most expensive Mainhand piece costing 1550 commendations.

War Hero

War Hero is the highest tier PvP gear and will also not have any valor rank requirement. However it will require you to trade it your old Battlemaster gear ensuring that everyone grinds Battlemaster before getting the better War Hero set. This new PvP tier will require Ranked Warzone commendations rather than the regular Warzone commendations. There will also be a Rated version of War Hero sets that will simply look slightly different and will have a PvP rating requirement to wear. The unrated War Hero set will cost 28250 Ranked WarZone commendations with the most expensive mainhand piece costing 3475 Ranked WarZone commendations.

Conclusion

My advice is if you still have Centurion gear, dump it for the new Recruit gear as soon as possible. If you have Champion gear, keep the pieces you have but fill in the missing pieces with Recruit gear. If you have a full Champion set start working on your Battlemaster PvP gear right away. Players that currently have a full Battlemaster set things get a bit harder as the new Battlemaster gear has higher expertise from the pre 1.2 versions. It will be a tough decision to try to grind War Hero gear with existing lower rated gear or re-grind the Battlemaster gear before going for War Hero.

Raiding and Group Play Etiquette

by aberent 10. February 2012 11:22
SWTOR

Long time MMO players will know that there is a basic etiquette to group play when doing raids/dungeons/flashpoints. In this article I want to share some of these basic group behavior rules that MMO players should know.

The purpose of this mutually agreed upon group etiquette has nothing to do with gamers having good manners but rather came from the need to maximize success rates of completing raids. Let’s face it Raids are designed to be challenging. In most cases they cannot be completed solo. Raids are usually designed to be challenging even for a well-balanced group, so it is important that everyone in the group knows their role and follows a basic group behavior.

First Timer

If this is your first time you are doing a particular Raid you are expected to tell your group members. This is to make sure that someone explains the particular raid mechanics to you. Some raids will have traps that will automatically kill you. Some raids have puzzles you may need to solve individually. Some boss encounters will have strange mechanics that will set half the room of fire. You need to know these things so that you can react accordingly and be a contributing member of your group.

The MMO Trinity

Regardless of your actual character type, in a raid you will take on 1 of the 3 roles. These roles are: Tank, DPS and Healer. The group leader will usually assign the roles to the group members. It is extremely important that you know your role in the group. If you have not been assigned a role you are probably going to be DPS.

Tank

A Tank is the player whose gear and abilities allow him to take/absorb lots of damage. This works differently in various games but basically a Tank will have a ton of hit points and good damage reduction. The tank will attempt to get “Agro” of every monster. In the best scenario every single monster and boss during and encounter will be attacking the Tank. Tanks will often have Agro abilities that will force the monsters to attack them.

If there are 2 tanks in the group sometimes it is necessary for the second weaker tank to get the Agro from any Mobs that spawn during the encounter. This is called the Off-Tank. Sometimes the second tank will also help the primary tank by taking the Agro for a bit to let the primary Tank recover.

However many times there is no need for the Off-Tank so make sure you listen to the group leader or ask if you are not sure.

Healer

Healers will usually do little or no damage but will instead focus on healing the party. If there are 2 healers in the group the stronger healer will usually focus on healing the tank to keep him alive. The second healer will focus on the rest of the party. The 2 reasons why healers will try not to attack is to make sure that the Mobs do not attack back. The healer cannot do their job of keeping everyone alive if they are running away from Mobs or are dead. The second reason is to make sure they save their spell points/mana/force for healing. Healers are usually sought after in any MMOs. A great healer can overcome many group mistakes.

DPS (Damage per Second)

Everyone else in the party regardless of class and even if they have more armor that damage ability will usually take on the DPS role. This means that while the tank is getting all the monsters to focus on him/her everyone else in the party will try to kill the Mobs or boss (in the right Kill Order). Remember the tank is not good at hitting things; the tanks job is to stay alive. It is the job of the DPS members of the group to do the vast majority of the damage.

The Kill Order

Many MMOs offer allow players to mark Mobs with target icons prior to the encounter. It is usually the Tanks job to mark or specify in which order he wants the DPS to take down the Mobs. Usually the weakest Mobs will be killed first. This is done to eliminate as much of the Mobs firepower as fast as possible. It may take 5 minutes to take down a boss that does 500 DPS, while it might take a few seconds to take down 3 weaker monsters that each do 100 damage per second. A weak Mob can still fire a powerful gun.

You may see that the Tank is switching between several Mobs and not following the kill order. The Tank is just trying to keep Agro to make sure that all the Mobs are attacking him. You should still stick to the assigned kill order no matter what the Tank is doing.

It is important for everyone to follow the kill order. If players divide their DPS amongst many different Mobs, it will take longer to kill Mobs and reduce the total DPS being done to the Tank. When players do not focus their DPS, Raids often fail.

The Hate List

Mobs will usually keep a hate list. The list of players they hate the most. The player on the top of the list will be attacked by the Mob. Player that does the most damage to the mob will often end up at the top of the hate list. Hence it is possible for a Mob to stop attacking the tank and switch to you if you are doing a good amount of DPS. There are several things the group needs to do in order for the Mob to continue attacking the Tank.

First the tank will get a head start attacking the mobs before everyone else joins. This is done to make sure the tank can build Agro and get to the top of the Mobs hate list first. So make sure that you listen to your Raid leader and give the tank a 5 second head start before joining the fight.

Make sure you follow the kill order. The tank will keep the Boss occupied while you take out the weaker Mobs. This will give the tank extra time to build Agro/Hate on all the other Mobs before you join in.

Tanks also have Agro abilities that will force them to the top of the hate list. However these abilities usually have a cool down and are not always available. They are often used if the Boss switches Agro to someone else (like the healer).

If you are doing too much DPS to the Boss and he attacks you, run to the tank and give the tank a few seconds to build up Agro again. This might mean that you actually stop attacking the Boss. Remember if you are not built for tanking you will not have the required damage reduction and hit points to survive the Boss. Also the healer is focusing on the Tank not you, so if you grab and keep the Bosses Agro you will probably die.

Never, ever run around in circles with the boss on your tail. Run to the tank. Healers will often use Area of Effect (AoE) heals on the tank, so the safest place is often right beside the tank.

Crowd Control

Some players will have Crowd Control or CC abilities that basically take out a single Mob from the fight for a while. However in Most games the CC ends as soon as you attack the Mob. It is extremely important not to attack Mobs that have been CCd either directly or accidently by using your Area of Effect (AoE) spells.

Healing Agro

Heals generate threat. It may be possible that as you are healing the Tank, the boss will perceive you as a greater threat and switch to you. This usually does not end well for the healer. If you are a healer make sure that you pace your heals. You don’t need to keep everyone healed to the max. Save your spell points and your most powerful spells for when you really need them.

DPS Positioning

In many games bosses will be weaker in the back than in the front. It is always a good idea to attack the boss from the back.

Pulls

It is often possible to pull a weaker Mob away from the group by doing a Line of Sight (Los) pull. A ranged DPS member will walk closer to the Mob, attack and quickly run back to the group. If this occurs listen to your group leader and wait with the group.

Mobs Area of Effect (AoE)

In many MMOs AoE spells have a little hint/tell before they occur. You may see a circle on the ground around you. That is usually not a good sign. If something new appears around you always move away or else you might find yourself standing in fire. Healers do not like that.

Rolling for Loot

Provided everyone does their job you might be able to take down the boss and actually get some Loot. Many MMOs will only have one or two rare items that drop from the boss. Often MMos will have some kind of a dice roll mechanic where you roll the dice to see who gets the item. Some MMOs will also have a Need or Greed system for rolling. What this means is that a player that selects Need on an Item will automatically win against any player that selected Greed. If two players select Need then the player with the highest roll wins. If all players select Greed, the player with the highest roll wins.

It is very important that you only select Need on items you are planning to use/wear. Make sure that the item is for your class and has abilities that your class uses. Also make sure the item is actually better than what you already have. Rolling Need on items you are going to sell or give to your companion (Ninja an Item) character can get you banned from any future groups.

If you need the item for your primary companion/pet make sure you ask the other members first if they don’t mind if you roll Need.

Not following Group Play Etiquette

It depends how badly you violate the group etiquette and if you caused the group to fail. In extreme cases you may stop getting heals and die. If you continue not to follow rules you may find yourself dead throughout the remainder of the Raid or if the game allows kicked out of the group.

You may get called a noob or something worse. You may get added to group leader Ignore list, preventing you from joining that group again. If doing a raid with guild members you may even get kicked out of the guild.

However on successful raid completion all is usually forgiven. You may still get called a noob though :)

When in Doubt

Communication is important. If you are not sure about something just ask. Group leaders prefer someone that is new and asks for guidance better then someone who causes the group to fail.
